Shiatsu

The Human Potential [DVD]

A clear presentation of the human energy field including meridians and chakras. Pauline Sasaki’s influence on Zen Shiatsu and the development of Quantum Shiatsu has evolved medicine in ways that will continue to foster health and well-being in the context of the new paradigm of healing. Her work has profoundly impacted my own development as a practitioner and instructor. I am so grateful.

Flower Essences

Floral Acupuncture by Deborah Craydon

A practical guide for learning the use of vibrational remedies with acupuncture point location and Five Element perspective. I came across it in 2005 when I was researching my paper on the history of flower essences for Mitch Stargrove’s class. It has served as an invaluable resource for my practice as I incorporated Floral Acupuncture into my work.

Intention based healing

Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton

I haven’t even finished reading this yet, because it is so mind blowing I can only read a little at a time to really digest this brilliant book! I keep renewing it, I really should just get my own copy of this! So far I am totally digging on the parallels between what Bruce Lipton writes about and Shiatsu theory. Once I get through the part on Quantum physics I think I will better understand and be able to explain how non-local modalities like Reiki and prayer work.

Bee Venom Therapy

Bee in Balance by Amber Rose

Describes indepth information of the healing benefits of bees including venom, honey, pollen, propolis, and royal jelly. Amber Rose is a licensed acupuncturist that employs bee stings in conjunction with acupuncture points. I have recently begun treating patients seeking bee venom therapy for Multiple Sclerosis. I hope to see more research done on apitherapy!

Talk Therapy

Non-violent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg

How to liberate yourself and help others to liberate themselves though conscious use of language. Understand what purpose emotions serve and how to voice your needs in a way that promotes choice and free-will. Expect more peace and harmony in your life using NVC! I feel grateful to Marshall Rosenburg for his exemplary contributions to world peace.

In solidarity with Rethinking Schools “Teach-in” day opposing the restriction of access to materials and open inquiry in Mexican-American studies programs in Arizona, the OCOM Library will be highlighting some Latino ways of healing.

Maya abdominal massage for women was reported to help alleviate common problems such as menstrual cramps, menopause, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and to correct infertility.8 This aspect of traditional Maya medicine is still practiced in parts of Mesoamerica today. It is evident from these few examples that massage has had a significant place in traditional Maya health, practices from ancient times to the present.

It also was used in conjunction with sweatbaths, or “pib’ nah” and “zumpul-che´,” defined as a bath for women after childbirth and for sick persons used to cast out disease in their bodies as it was in many other cultures. Ailments treated by sweatbaths included certain fevers, poisonous stings or bites and rheumatism. Sweatbaths were used for purifying the body and ridding it of unhealthy “humours.” Maya bonesetters in Guatemala are called hueseros, compone huesos, componedores de hueso, or sometimes sobadores (i.e., a term also used for massage specialist). It is interesting to note that archeologists have found skeletons from the Pre- Columbian era with bones that apparently had been broken, realigned and healed, all of which indicate skill in treatment. One of the earliest Sweatnath documented in Mesoamerica is the one in Naranjo, in the Central Highlands of Guatemala, dated in the Middle Preclassic ca 800 BC (Left). During the Classic, Piedras Negras in the Petén Lowlands had at least 7 sweatbaths for ceremonial and medical uses.

Two different approaches to “bone setting” by the “hueseros”, have been found in today’s Guatemala.

The Kaq’chik’el Maya bonesetters believe that they have an innate ability, and that their hands “act of their own accord in locating problem areas.” These bonesetters rely on their hands to guide them in diagnosing and treating injuries; a combination of experience and intuition were used. First the bonesetter listens to the person’s story, then looks for deformity, reddening, edema and bruising to determine the type and location of the injury. They also may check range of motion in the area. A lubricant is applied so that their hands can glide smoothly over the area, pressing and looking for signs of tenderness. The person might have a golpe or deep bruise, a zafadura or sprain, a dislocation or a fracture. In many cases, massage and limb movement are the main treatment. In cases of fracture, skillful bonesetters will use traction, pressure and immobilization to reset the bone. Their approach is practical and non-supernatural.

Tzu’tuhil’ Bonesetters in San Pedro Atitlán represent a different approach. They believe that they are divinely called to the vocation through dreams, and use sacred objects called huesos or baq in their work. These sacred objects might be small animal bones, potsherds, obsidian or Jade Pre-Columbian artifacts they’ve found. The huesos are said to move over the body of their own accord and indicate to the bonesetter the location and type of injury. The bonesetter uses the object in setting or realigning the bones, and then uses lubrication to touch the area directly and finish the treatment. These bonesetters rely heavily on a supernatural or divine element, in addition to manual skills.

In solidarity with Rethinking Schools “Teach-in” day opposing the restriction of access to materials and open inquiry in Mexican-American studies programs in Arizona, the OCOM Library will be highlighting some Latino ways of healing.

Enema scene Petén Lowlands

Holistic by its very nature, Mayan medicine is classified as a medico-religious healing tradition. It takes into account not only the physical ills of the body but the effects of the spirit attitudes toward life and living, emotions such as grief, depression, anger, fright, etc. and recognizes how intertwined they are. Fundamental to the medicine of the Maya is the concept of “life force” or ch’ulel and is the first of the six principles of Mayan medicine. This life force is everywhere and permeates everything, mountains, rivers, houses, plants, people and is said to be from a divine, spiritual source. Ch’ulel binds everyone and everything together. It is a main goal for the Mayan healer to balance the flow of ch’ulel in the body. Mayan healers also maintain that praying directs ch’ulel to where it is needed.

The second principle of Mayan medicine is that there is no separation between the body and the soul, between the physical and spiritual realms. Ch’ulel means everything is interwoven and interconnected, that the physical and spiritual are only different ends of a continuum. It also means that medicine is actually all around us! Within this continuum are also spirits who can help in healing.

The third principle is the recognition of natural cycles and the veneration of plants. Mayan healers talk with (as opposed to just talking to) plants, as do many herbalists in other traditions. Sometimes with the help of his “Way” (Its soul-animal companion), the healer is chosen by certain plants and they develop a very special relationship. These particular plants then especially aid the healer in treating the sick, particularly in difficult cases.

The fourth principle recognizes that healing is an integrative, comprehensive approach, with everybody, including the healer, the patient, spirits, plants, etc. working together to bring about the healing. There is no single component more important than the other, and especially important is prayer.

The fifth principle is the status of the blood. It also helps distinguish between illnesses that are of physical versus spiritual (emotional) origin and determines the consequent direction of treatment.

The sixth principle is that of hot and cold. The concept of hot and cold applies equally to illnesses, foods, and plants. Fevers, diarrhea, and vomiting are example of “hot” diseases while cramps, constipation, and paralysis are examples of “cold” ones. Hot foods can be garlic, onions, pepper, and ginger while cold foods would include cheese, for example.

Tikal Lord presents offering in vessel to Itzam’ná and Ixch’el

Medicine among the ancient Mayas was a blend of religion and science. It was practiced by priests who inherited their position and received extensive education. The Mayas sutured wounds with human hair, reduced fractures, and used casts. They were skillful dental surgeons and made prostheses from Jade and turquoise and filled teeth with iron pyrite, they used Obsidian blades to perform surgery. In fact obsidian blades are currently in use in some U.S. hospitals for heart bypass surgery. It seems that they cut cleaner, thereby promoting more rapid healing with less scar tissue. Three clinical diseases, pinta, leishmaniasis, and yellow fever, and several psychiatric syndromes were described, Athletes’ foot and diarrhea were very common and fast cured with herbal medicine. The Mayas also described the existence of conjunctival granulations, (Clamida Trachomatis Goldschmidt P et al. Rev Panamericana de Salud vol 22 no 1, pp 1020). Weiss argues for the presence of “supra-inial lesions” in Guatemala (Weiss 1967, 1981).

The ancient Maya perceived health as “balance”, whereas illness and disease were “imbalance”. Balance, however, was influenced by season and varied by age, gender, personality and exposure toenvironmental temperature extremes. A central medical-related theme held that balance was effected [sic] favorably or adversely by diet. The Classic Maya used several plants such as the Chaya (Chay), (Cnidoscolus chayamansa), also known as the Mayan spinach, used for is high contents of protein, calcium, iron and vitamins, and the resin of the Ek’ Balam shrub, (Croton flavens L.), which rapidly seals the damaged blood vessel. To treat and close wounds in muscular tissue the bark of the bakalche’ tree (Bourreria pulchra Millsp.) was applied. This has been documented in inscriptions in Quiriguá, Ceibal, Tikal and Altar de Sacrificios, among others. They used Jade also. In fact the name Jade is derived from the Spanish “Piedra de Ijada”, loin-stone, Jade having been recognized by the Maya as a remedy for kidney ailments. Because of its beneficial effect on the kidneys, the stone was also known as “Lapis Nephriticus”. That, indeed, is where the term ‘nephrite’ came from.

The Fourth Uncle in the Mountain by Quang Van Nguyen

Fourth Uncle in the Mountain is a true story about an orphan, Quang Van Nguyen, who is adopted by a sixty-four year old monk, Thau, who carries great responsibility for his people as a barefoot doctor. Thau manages, against all odds to raise his son to follow in his footsteps and in doing so, saves his son, as well as a part of Vietnam’s esoteric knowledge from the Vietnam holocaust. Thau is wanted by the French regime, and occasionally must flee into the jungle, where he is perfectly at home living among the animals. Thau is not the average monk; he practices an ancient lineage of Chinese medicine and uses magic to protect animals and help people.

Ten Key Formula Families by Huang Huang

By introducing the concept of constitutions and the attendant vulnerabilities of those constitutions to certain types of disorders, he hands the reader a very useful key to understanding how and when to use these formulas in the clinic.

Kiiko Matsumoto’s Clinical Strategies by Kiiko Matsumoto

This book completes the presentation of Kiiko Matsumoto’s clinical work to date and the background behind it. Both volumes encapsulate Matsumoto’s work, detailing the treatment protocols and techniques formulated through many years of study with Japanese Acupuncture and Shiatsu Masters as well as her own vast clinical experience.

The Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot

Two of the world’s most eminent thinkers believe that the universe itself may be a giant hologram, quite literally a kind of image or construct created, at least in part, by the human mind… Their theory explains not only many of the unsolved puzzles of physics but also such mysterious occurrences as telepathy, out-of-body and near-death experiences, “lucid” dreams, and even religious and mystical experiences such as feelings of cosmic unity and miraculous healings.

I am putting together a subject guide for finding history of medicine resources, but in the meantime, I thought I’d send some more info on subject headings your way. In PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?holding=orugyklib), you can limit to their History of Medicine subset. Simply select “Limits” and from the subsets section, select “History of Medicine.”

Another more direct way of searching is by using MeSH terms for the history of medicine; there are a ton to choose from, but I pulled out a few for you all to get started with:

Acupuncture/history
Drugs, Chinese Herbal/history
Health Policy*/history
History, 20th Century
Medicine, Chinese Traditional/*history

You can just copy and paste the subject heading into your search bar, and you should come up with a pretty decent list of results. If you find one article that you are interested in, you can look at the MeSH terms and snowball from there.

If you want to narrow down your search, you could add additional MeSH terms. You can set up searches up like a mathematical formulas as well. Here is an example: If you were investigating the use of medicinal herbs in medieval Europe, you could search:

(Phytotherapy/history OR Plants, Medicinal*) AND Europe AND (History, 15th Century OR History, 16th Century OR History 17th Century OR History, Medieval)

You can use MeSh terms in both PubMed or EBSCO. EBSCO allows you to build a complex search using the MeSH thesaurus, while PubMed has just a simple interface that works best with “mathematical” boolean formulas – I would suggest trying out both and seeing which interface you like more.

Good luck!
